King Felipe VI of Spain sent a telegram to the new King Charles III of England, after learning of the death of Elizabeth II on Thursday. The royal houses of Spain and the United Kingdom have had very close relations for decades, treating each other like family.
The telegram says: “Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, dies aged 96. Deeply saddened by the sorrowful news of the passing away of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, your beloved Mother, I would like to offer Your Majesty and the British people, on my behalf and on behalf of the Spanish Government and people, our most heartfelt condolences. Her sense of duty, commitment and a whole life devoted to serving the people of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland set an example for all of us and will remain as a solid and valuable legacy for future generations. Queen Letizia and I send Your Majesty and the whole Family our love and prayers. You are all in our hearts and thoughts. We will miss Her dearly. With all my friendship and affection, Felipe."
King Felipe VI was on Thursday in Seville, where he knows the death of Queen Elizabeth II. For decades, the booth royal houses have had very close and familiar relations. The Spanish Monarch received from Queen Elizabeth II the title of the Order of the Garter. This good relations have only been tarnished by the British occupation of Gibraltar, whose sovereignty Spain claims.The Emeritus King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía declined to attend the wedding of the then Prince of Wales with Lady Di, due to the intention of the spouses to start their honeymoon in the British colony.
